Caillou Joins the Circus (French Title: Caillou Aime Le Cirque) is the 8th episode from Season 1 of Caillou. This episode first aired on September 22, 1997 on Canada and on September 21, 2000 on PBS Kids.
Plot[]
Caillou's father Boris has promised to take him to a circus. On the day Caillou believes they will visit, he, after having a dream where he is taming a tiger in the circus, eagerly wakes early, dresses himself (with several mishaps), and brushes his teeth to impress his father. When Caillou remarks that he does not want to be late for the circus, Boris explains that the circus is actually taking place tomorrow, not today, much to Caillou's dismay. Caillou cries over his misunderstanding before Boris asks him to help him make breakfast downstairs; grumpy and annoying at Caillou refuses, and after breaking the wheel of a nearby toy car that he tries to play with, he bursts into a temper tantrum, furiously kicking, screaming and pounding his fists against the floor. In the process, he wakes up his sister Rosie, and Boris scolds Caillou for his behavior and demands that he come downstairs immediately.
Downstairs, Boris, who is preparing to make breakfast, suggests cutting toast into duck shapes, but Caillou, still fuming over not going to the circus, refuses. To cheer up his son, Boris decides to have a "circus breakfast", and cut the toast into circus animals instead. While Boris prepares the toast, Caillou grabs a handful of eggs to be cooked, but accidentally drops them after tripping over Gilbert. Boris accidentally overheats the pieces of toast, and unknowingly juggles the hot slices after retrieving them, causing Caillou to laugh. Boris decides to have a pretend "circus parade" and marches around the kitchen with his children. They unintentionally wake up Doris, and they ask her to join their game. She politely declines and heads off as Boris, Caillou and Rosie continue Downstairs, Boris, who is preparing to make breakfast, suggests cutting toast into duck shapes, but Caillou, still fuming over not going to the circus, refuses. Trivia[]
- One might confuse the episode by noticing the title thinking at Caillou and his parents will be Circus stars but when one the episode they have been proven wrong.
- Due to Caillou's tantrum, this episode has became an internet meme, and there has been GoAnimate/Vyond versions of this episode made by GoF**s/"Baby Show" Haters with Boris grounding Caillou at the end of it, and versions by GoAnimators where he doesn't ground Caillou.
- This episode marks the first out of a couple of times where a character is reprimanded for acting up (in this case, where Caillou throws a temper tantrum and wakes up Rosie) - which is noticeably absent from other episodes featuring inappropriate behavior.
- Caillou saying "Oh!" when he rips his shoelaces is the same as Caillou's All Alone when Caillou slides a stack of paper causing to fall over.
- Caillou also cries about the circus in Caillou's Promise.
- Ironies:
- Caillou should’ve listened to Boris saying the circus was tomorrow, instead of saying it was today.
- Boris should’ve checked the toast so it doesn’t burn, and Caillou should’ve been more careful with the eggs.
- This episode was banned (except on Cartoonito) due to Caillou throwing a tantrum.
- Besides the ban, The episode has received mixed to negative reviews from parents and critics, with particular criticism over a scene where Caillou throws a tantrum because he cannot go to a circus. The episode is primarily responsible for public disdain of the Caillou franchise, and has been withdrawn from multiple networks since airing.
- The following scenes in this episode were used in the Canadian Season 1 intro.
- Caillou ripping his shoelaces,
- Caillou telling Boris that he dressed himself
- Caillou throwing a tantrum over the circus.
Goofs[]
- The title is misleading because Caillou does not particularly join the circus, although Caillou's family holds a pretend circus at home.
- When Caillou throws a temper tantrum, his toy car loses a wheel, but when the camera moves, the wheel disappears.
- After Daddy scolded Caillou for coming downstairs, when he turns around, Rosie has normal eyes instead of black dotted ones.
- Rosie is strangely shown to not be afraid of clowns, unlike Caillou's Halloween and Caillou Is A Clown.
- However, it is possible that something happened offscreen between these two episodes that caused Rosie to develop coulrophobia (the fear of clowns), or the episode occurred after said episodes.
